Market demand is growing for CRPAs in a single integrated form factor

The Resilient PNT market has grown rapidly over the past couple of years and now offers a variety of CRPA-based anti-jamming systems targeting a range of capability price points and applications (civil and defence).

These solutions have traditionally followed a 2-box approach requiring a separate antenna array and digital antenna control unit (DACU) - Infinidome and Tualcom, for instance, have designs following this common methodology.

A 2-box approach though complicates installation, and in particular is unsuited to smaller space-constrained platforms such as drones and many civil applications. Market demand is therefore growing for an integrated approach where the antenna array and electronics are combined into a single convenient and compact unit.

Entry-level (Civil)

Entry-level integrated solutions are available from Calian (Tallysman) and others but are often limited to handling just 1 or 2 interferers (e.g., inadvertent in-band interference or small plug-in jammers).

If the interferers are largely ground-based, an alternative option for this kind of scenario is to use a specialist GNSS antenna with a reception pattern designed to suppress signals received at low elevations; Helix Geospace's Horizon Nulling Antenna (HNA) is a good option.

Mid-level (Civil)

With the rapid rise in GNSS disruption worldwide, civil applications are increasingly experiencing more than just 1 or 2 simple interferers.

Mid-level CRPAs aim to combat these increasingly sophisticated attacks through providing more nulls (to handle multiple simultaneous jammers), greater null depth (to combat high-power jammers) and widen support to protect both high and low GNSS bands.

CRPAs such as the NovAtel GAJT-410ML, Calian CR8894SXF+, Roke Nav-Sync Armour, and Tualcom TUALAJ 8200 are representative of this mid-level category, and typically protect a couple of GNSS bands (often L1 & L2), mitigate a larger number of jammers (3 nulls/band; 6 in total), and with an increased ability to neutralise the jamming signals (30-40dB null depth).

But this is often not enough...

High-level (Civil & Defence)

In heavily-contested GNSS environments, such as in or near to conflict zones, the volume and severity of GNSS interference and jamming can often result in complete denial of service.

Tackling such environments requires a considerable step-up in performance and capabilities across the board.

CRPAs at this high-end extend protection to many more GNSS bands to improve resiliency; widening support to other satellite constellations beyond GPS also boosts satellite availability thereby improving redundancy and achieving a better position fix.

Jamming suppression is also boosted through creating more nulls (typically 6/band; 12 in total) and with greater null depth (50dB; >90dB J/S), although resource constraints in some CRPA designs results in a trade-off between the number of bands and nulls per band that can be achieved.

Compared to the mid-level CRPAs described previously, these military-grade CRPAs also tend to be much larger (12x), heavier (7.5x), and power-hungry (2x), as well as being considerably more expensive. Understandable perhaps when targeted at military vehicles, but unsuited to the majority of civil applications.

It became clear that what was missing in the market was a CRPA capable of delivering high performance, but engineered down to a size and price point suitable for civil applications.
